Frequent Urination in Women: What are the Common Causes of Urinary Urgency in Women?

Frequent urination in women is also known as an overactive bladder and is triggered by various factors like changes in hormones. Frequent urination is the need to urinate more than normal and can sometime be accompanied by an increase in the amount of released urine. The person experiencing frequent urination may also feel pain when urinating.

The triggers of frequent urination in women vary and sometimes, this condition is temporary. Those experiencing this condition for a long time must seek medical attention to know if there are any underlying causes and to get appropriate treatment.

Various causes of frequent urination in women:

•    Diseases like interstitial cystitis or inflammation of the bladder, multiple sclerosis, kidney failure, bladder carcinoma, nephritis, etc. may cause urinary urgency in ladies. Tumors on the ovaries or uterus and on the bladder also compress the bladder resulting to this problem.

•    Women undergo hormonal changes more than men which is why they are more prone to frequent urination. Women experience variations in their hormonal levels during pregnancy, after giving birth, during menstruation and menopause.

•    UTI or urinary tract infection which is also more common in women is one more reason why ladies experience urinary urgency. UTI patients often experience pain during urination as well and the released urine looks cloudy and smells foul and may contain blood in some cases.

•    Multiple pregnancies may also cause frequent urination in women because of the reduced bladder support caused by the weakening of the bladder and pelvic floor muscles which results to the uncontrollable flow of urine.

•    Other common causes of frequent urination in women include: intake of large amounts of fluids, use of certain medications, aging, stress, hyperthyroidism, radiation therapy, STDs, having a small bladder and stroke.
